- Summary
- The minstrel Tannhäuser, grown weary of the pagan revelries in the court of Venus, longs for salvation. Repudiating the goddess, he finds himself at the Wartburg where he meets the saintly Elisabeth who encourages his quest for redemption. Journeying to Rome, Tannhäuser is rejected when told by the Pope that he could no more be forgiven his sins than could the papal staff break into flower. Returning to the Wartburg to die, Tannhäuser expires as a pilgrim band enters, proclaiming the miracle that the Pope\u0027s staff has blossomed.
