Summary
The advent of steam navigation on the Amazon River in 1853 was a project that intertwined notions of modernity and progress with processes of racialization of maritime work. In this book, racialization is a key element in discussing places of subalternity assigned to the maritime category, made up of indigenous and African descendants. Conceived by the officialdom, the separation of shipboard functions was not limited to the organization of tasks, but sought to be expanded to interdict the autonomy of the seamen outside the ships. This study evaluates the weight of these places in the "making of oneself" of a category still little explored by historiography, due to the scope of its mobility on the world's largest river. From the places created by the seamen themselves and their associations, they made themselves seen as subjects of rights and of their own history. Caio Giulliano Paião holds a bachelor's and master's degree in History from the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) and a PhD from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). His research interests revolve around the social history of labor, with a focus on the labor movement and the post-Abolition period.
