Summary
  • An evening with Harry Belafonte was taped on November 2, 2000 at the Art Institute of Chicago, in front of a live audience. The hour-long, PBS-TV live-to-tape interview program was hosted by Belafonte's friend and fellow actor/humanitarian, Danny Glover. Belafonte has appeared in countless performances and been honored throughout his life with many awards, but An evening with Harry Belafonte provides a rare look inside the life and times that made him a legend. Studying at the famed Dramatic Workshop in New York City, and becoming involved in the legendary Negro Ensemble Theatre before starring in movies like Calypso and Carmen Jones, Belafonte was also driven to support humanitarian causes, including marching with Martin Luther King, the Free South Africa movement, the "We are the world" recording session and UNICEF.
  • An evening with Berry Gordy was taped on November 16, 2012, before a live theater audience at the Art Institute of Chicago. Hosted by the late award-winning journalist Gwen Ifill, An evening with Berry Gordy is a must-see, live-to-tape one-on-one interview with Berry Gordy that leads the audience through Gordy's celebrated life as entrepreneur, songwriter, record producer, movie director and producer who has left an indelible influence on music and films both nationally and internationally. The show begins in Detroit, where Gordy founded Motown Records in 1959, and where he would grow the company into the most successful African American-owned enterprise in the United States, creating the new, revolutionary, "Motown sound" along the way. It includes performances of old and new school Motown tributes by Valerie Simpson (Ashford & Simpson), KEM, Janelle Monae, Brandon Dixon, and Valisia LeKae.
  • An evening with the HistoryMakers: Chicago stories was taped in Chicago on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Art Institute of Chicago in front of a standing room only audience. Hosted by actor/producer Harry Lennix and actress/director Regina Taylor with music provided by music producer/vocalist Terisa Griffin and her eight piece band, An evening with the HistoryMakers: Chicago stories showcases for the first time the amazingly rich history of Chicago's African American community, a richness that many need to be reminded of amidst the violence and turmoil that has plagued Chicago. Stories from the archives demonstrate the significance of Chicago's African American leadership in the areas of music, fashion, business, the arts, civil rights, and politics. It reminds viewers why Chicago was a destination for hundreds of thousands of African Americans seeking a better life throughout the 20th century.
