Summary
Writer Stanley Crouch was born on December 14, 1945, in Los Angeles, California. After graduating from high school, he attended junior colleges in Los Angeles. He began his career teaching literacy for an anti-poverty program. In August 1965, Crouch witnessed the Watts Riot, an experience that radicalized Crouch. He worked as an actor and playwright at the Studio Watts Company, and discovered the writings of Ralph Ellison and Albert Murray. Crouch taught at the Claremont Colleges in California from 1968 to 1975, before moving to New York. He played the drums in an avant-garde jazz band and worked as a staff writer for the Village Voice from 1979 to 1988, where he found his talent as a writer.
