Summary
Dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones was born on February 15, 1952 in Bunnell, Florida. Jones attended the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton where he studied dance and met Arnie Zane in 1971. They co-founded the American Dance Asylum (ADA) in 1973. Iin 1982, they formed the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Following the death of Zane in 1988, Jones created the pieces Absence and Last Supper at Uncle Tom's Cabin. In addition to producing more than 140 works for his company, Jones was commissioned to create dances for other companies, including the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Boston Ballet. In 2010, Jones was named executive artistic director of New York Live Arts. His work was recognized with the 2010 Jacob's Pillow Dance Award and the 2005 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award. Jones also received honorary doctorate degrees from Yale University and Columbia College.
