- Summary
- Singer Della Reese was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 6, 1931. Reese began singing in the church choir by age six, and by age thirteen, she was singing with Mahalia Jackson. Because of her gospel roots, Reese won a contest at Detroit's famed Flame Show Bar. After moving to New York City in 1953, Reese recorded several albums, earning her first hit with "And That Reminds Me (Of You)." Shortly thereafter, she recorded her biggest hit, Don't You Know? Her success led to numerous television and film engagements, including multiple appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. By 1969, Reese was hosting her own talk show, Della. From 1994 to 2003, Reese played the role of Tess in the popular TV series Touched By An Angel. In addition to her two Grammy Award nominations, Reese was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.
