- College president Zerrie Campbell was born on February 9, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. She earned her B.A. and M.S. degrees from Northern Illinois University in 1974; and, her M.A. degree from Chicago State University in 1978. She began her career at Malcolm X College in Illinois as assistant dean of student support services. She was also an instructor. In 1983, she was appointed assistant professor of English at Harold Washington College. In 1987, she accepted a position at the City Colleges of Chicago. She returned to Malcolm X as vice president in 1989, then, became the first female president of the college in 1992. Campbell retired from Malcolm X College in 2008. Campbell was an active member of numerous national and local organizations. She received several awards, including the 1999 Outstanding Woman Award from Harold Washington College; and the 1988 Outstanding Educator Award from the 7th Congressional District in Illinois.
