- Civil rights lawyer and city government official Anna Langford was born on October 27, 1917 in Springfield, Ohio. After graduation from Hyde Park High School in Chicago in 1935, she attended a trade school. From 1938 to 1956, she worked as a typist in the Social Security office, the Election Commissioners Office and the Office of the Secretary of State. In 1956, she received her J.D. degree from Roosevelt University and began a career as civil rights and criminal lawyer. Langford practiced throughout Illinois, actively defending civil rights workers in the 1960s. She joined Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Chicago civil rights marches. In 1971, Langford became one of the first two women elected to the Chicago City Council. She returned later to serve two additional terms from 1983 until 1991. She received numerous humanitarian and civic awards and honors. Langford passed away on September 17, 2008 at age 90.
