- Educator Gloria Owens Hemphill, daughter of Olympic track star Jesse Owens, was born on August 8, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio. Hemphill graduated with her B.S. degree in education in 1953 from her father's alma mater, Ohio State University. She received her M.S. degree in education from the University of Chicago. During her career with Chicago Public Schools Hemphill worked for the Chicago Board of Education, serving as staff assistant and coordinator for the Department of Government Funded Programs, the Department of Equal Educational Opportunity Programs and the Department of Curriculum. She was scholarship chairperson and vice chairperson of the board of directors of the Jesse Owens Foundation founded by Hemphill and her sisters in 1980. She was a member of the board of directors of the International Amateur Athletic Association and Up With People. She was a member of the Chicago Urban League and the United Negro College Fund.
