- Social activist and real estate entrepreneur Thomas Curtis Barnwell, Jr. was born on June 2, 1935 on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. At a time when the only transportation on or off the island was by boat, his family survived by farming their land growing vegetables, hunting , and catching shrimp and crabs. He graduated from St. Helena High School on St. Helena Island in 1954 and attended Clafin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Barnwell began his community service career at Penn Community Service, Inc. As a community activist, he held positions as Assistant Director for Beaufort-Jasper Hampton Economic Opportunity Commission, Executive Director of Beaufort-Jasper-Hampton Comprehensive Health Services, Inc. and the Regional Director of National Consumer Cooperative Bank, Charleston, South Carolina branch. Barnwell worked to ensure healthcare, education, employment and affordable housing for the native islanders. He was also a land developer and private business owner of rental properties.
