Summary
Songwriter Janie Bradford was born on June 2, 1939, in Charleston, Missouri, to Richard Henry, a minister, and Elizabeth Bradford. In 1956, Bradford graduated from Lincoln High School in Charleston, South Carolina. She then attended the Detroit Institute of Technology. In 1958, Bradford joined Motown Records, working initially as a secretary, but soon began to write songs. There, she and Gordy co-wrote two singles that were included on Jackie Wilson's album, Lonely Teardrops. Bradford and Gordy co-authored the hit-single, "Money (That's What I Want)" with Gordy in 1959. She independently wrote the lyrics for Marvin Gay's track, "Just Keep Thinkin' Bout My Baby," which was one of his top-selling singles. In 2010, Bradford co-authored an album of new songs with Marilyn McLeod titled, I Believe in Me, that was released under record label, Twinn Records, Inc. Bradford founded the Heroes and Legends Scholarship Foundation, where she has also served as CEO.
