- Psychiatrist Dr. Bruce Ballard was born on December 19, 1939 in Waverly Hills, Kentucky. He earned his M.D. degree from Columbia University in 1964. Upon the completion of his internship in Chicago and his residency in New York, Ballard became the chief of mental health services at Hickam Air Force Base in 1968. Returning to New York in 1970, he worked as both a practicing psychiatrist and an educator before becoming associate dean for equal opportunity programs at Cornell University in 1981; and later, adding the title of associate dean for student affairs. He remained at Cornell and also became director of the Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program, which helps minority students experience first-hand medical research. He was active on a number of committees with the American Psychiatric Association and other organizations, and was the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Psychiatric Association's Nancy C.A. Roeske, M.D. Award in 2001.
