- Violinist Karen "Lady in Red" Briggs was born on August 12, 1963, in New York City, New York, and grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia. When Briggs was still in high school, she played violin for a wedding in what would be her first professional job as a violinist. By 1983, she was playing with the Virginia Symphony, where she remained for the next four years. In 1987, she returned to New York City, where she won amateur night at the famous Apollo Theater four times before taking a year off from playing. In 1991, she auditioned for Yanni, and went on to become his most featured musician over the next thirteen years. Briggs also made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1994, performing with pianist Dave Gruisin. She has performed with a number of artists over the years including Stanley Clarke, the Wu Tang Clan, En Vogue and Chaka Khan.
