- Curator and artist Joyce Owens Anderson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of an opera singer. Owens attended Howard University and earned a B.F.A. degree and then attended Yale University, earning a M.F.A. degree in painting. After working as an arts and crafts director, art teacher, and producer for Philadelphia's CBS television station, she moved to Chicago and spent eight years working for WBBM-CBS2 TV News as the graphic arts coordinator. In 1996, Owens began teaching studio painting and drawing at Chicago State University. Her artwork, which primarily uses canvas and wood with acrylic paints, is known for using found objects and addressing concerns of race. Her work has been shown at solo exhibitions throughout Chicago and the rest of the country. She has worked for Random House as a children's book illustrator, and was hired to paint the official portrait of former Chicago Mayor Eugene Sawyer.
