- Chemist and academic administrator Gloria Long Anderson was born on November 5, 1938 in Altheimer, Arkansas. Anderson earned her B.S. degree in chemistry and mathematics from Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College in 1958; her M.S. degree in organic chemistry from Atlanta University in 1960; and her Ph.D. degree in physical organic chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1968. Anderson joined the faculty of Morris Brown College in Atlanta in 1968 as an associate professor and chair of the chemistry department. She also served as dean and twice as interim college president. Anderson also found time to pursue her research in organic chemistry, particularly the chemistry of Fluorine-19 and its use as a chemical marker. Her research was used in anti-viral drug studies, and she received patents in 2001 and 2009. In 2007, Anderson was named the Fuller E. Callaway professor of chemistry and vice president for academic affairs.
