- Science educator and administrator DeAnna Banks Beane was born on January 25, 1940 in Washington, D.C. She received her B.S. degree in zoology from Howard University in 1962; and her M.Ed. degree from Rutgers University in 1973. After serving fourteen years as a science teacher and two years as a program officer for a school desegregation assistance center, Beane was appointed education director for the National Urban Coalition where she developed a national program to increase minority involvement in science and mathematics. In 1991, Beane joined the staff of the Association of Science and Technology Centers, Inc. as director of the YouthALIVE! Initiative to help science and children's museums implement programs to engage youth from underserved communities. From 2001 until her retirement in 2006, Beane served as director of Partnerships for Learning at ASTC. Beane also published her book, Mathematics and Science: Critical Filters for the Future of Minority Students.
