  • Two scrapbooks of cuttings, programs, cards, and other ephemera documenting performances attended by Dr. J. Herbert Low between 1876 and 1907 in Chicago and New York, largely devoted to classical music, opera, concerts, and recitals. Includes expositions, lectures, readings, and theatrical performances, with some circus, magic, minstrelsy, sideshows, and tableaux vivants. Of note are several events at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and others related to Erasmus Hall High School (Brooklyn, N.Y.), including a dinner entertainment attended by Dr. Low and Genevieve Hubbard Low, his wife, with a special menu and program.
  • A matched pair of 19th century folio volume scrapbooks with decorated endpapers, each containing 134 leaves. There are a few pages of notes in manuscript in the first volume. Many entries are annotated with the names of attendees.
  • Volume 1 (MWEZ + n.c. 9574) consists of 134 leaves of cuttings and memorabilia, mainly from Chicago, documenting musical and stage performances including many at McVicker's Theatre; band concerts led by Theodore Thomas, Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore, and John Philip Sousa; a few benefit performances including an appearance by the aquatic adventurer Captain Paul Boyton; readings by Mark Twain and George Washington Cable; lectures by John L. Stoddard and Jean de Reszke; an 1886 African-American Emancipation Day [Juneteenth] celebration under the supervision of Colonel James Lewis (New Orleans, La.); a commemoration of George Washington; Alexander Black's 1894 magic lantern "picture play" or stereopticon, Miss Jerry, starring Blanche Bayliss; performances by Ole Bull, the Nord-Amerikanscher Sängerbund, Rafael Joseffy, Adelina Patti, Teresa Carreño, Moriz Rosenthal, Hans von Bülow, Eduard Strauss, Arthur Nikisch, and Ignace Paderewski, among many others.
  • Volume 2 (MWEZ + n.c. 9575) consists of 47 leaves of cuttings and memorabilia, mainly from New York and Brooklyn, documenting musical and stage performances along with readings and lectures by William Dean Howells, Beatrice Herford, and Jerome K. Jerome. There are 27 inverted leaves of portraits clipped from pictorial magazines as well as engraved portraits of Sir William Thompson, Sir Charles Wheatstone, Michel de Montaigne, Thomas Starr King, Edgar Allan Poe, Charlotte Brontë, Alfred Tennyson, E.D.E.N. Southworth, M. F. Maury, Hamilton Fish, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, and Hermann von Helmholtz. A broadside poster advertising a concert appearance by Anton Rubinstein and Henryk Wieniawski at Aiken's Theatre (Chicago, 1872-1873), has been removed from a small envelope and placed in an accompanying portfolio (MWEZ + n.c. 9575A).

Biography
James Herbert Low, the second principal of Erasmus Hall High School, Brooklyn, New York (1917-1934), was born in Bradford, Vermont in 1868 and died in New York City, December 20, 1959. He was married on July 12, 1899 to the former Genevieve Hubbard who died August 5, 1923. A well-known progressive educator and lecturer on history and politics with an affiliation at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Low is the author of English history as a background to modern American life, published in 1928. An amateur pianist, composer, and serious enthusiast of classical music who studied at the Juilliard School of Music after his retirement from public service, Dr. Low kept two scrapbook diaries where he pasted cuttings and other memorabilia to record his attendance at performances in Chicago and New York from 1876 to 1907.
