Summary
An omnibus New York City Arts program broadcast on public television. This installment begins with an intro by Cora Kahn, president of the New 42nd Street and a key player in the redevelopment of Times Square during the mid-to-late 1990s. She highlights the New 42nd Street Studios, an office, rehearsal and performance space for artists, performers and non-profits. (4:10) Kahn introduces a segment featuring dancer/choreographer Richard Move, known for portraying Martha Graham in a series of stage appearances, as well as for being the artistic director of Martha@Town Hall. Move discusses his early life and path toward the dance world, as well as the artists who influenced his work. The interview is interspersed with footage of his performance as Graham. (8:33) Move takes over hosting duties, speaking about Martha Graham and introducing a clip from another WNET program, CityArts, originally aired in 1999. The program-within-a-program features footage from Move's work, Martha@Mother, further interview footage with Move, and interviews with Stuart Hodes, a member of Martha Graham's troupe in the 1950s, and dancer Keely Garfield. Move is then seen making up as Graham in his dressing room, remaining in character as the legendary choreographer while he goes through the process. This is interspersed with footage of Graham herself in a similar setting during a 1963 television interview. Move's words and actions are interspersed with the Graham broadcast as viewers come to realize they are watching Move's note-perfect recreation of the vintage show, as done in his piece, Martha@The 1963 Interview. (12:20) As the CityArts clip continues, the setting shifts to Mother, an NYC club/cabaret popular in the mid-1990s, as patrons gather for Move's performance. Deborah Jowitt, then-dance critic for the Village Voice, discusses Mother's ambience and virtues as an ideal space for this kind of performance piece. This is followed by further Move performance footage, as well as additional interview segments with Move, Garfield and Hodes. (17:11) Following the conclusion of the CityArts clips, the MetroArts program proper resumes. Move is interviewed regarding famous guest choreographer/dancers, including Merce Cunningham and Yvonne Rainer, who have participated with him in the Martha performances. He also speaks about the aspects of Graham's work which he finds particularly fascinating. (20:37) Move then introduces a new segment focusing on Cunningham's work, specifically the film of his piece, CRWDSPCR. (22:00) This begins with a brief conversation between Cunningham and Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation archivist David Vaughan, taped in July 1999. The two discuss the CRWSDSPCR film, as well as Cunningham's creation of the choreographic work. (26:20) This is followed by the showing of the entire film. (1:20:25) Move introduces the film of Cunningham's Beach Birds For Camera, preceded by a brief Cunningham intro. (1:53:35) The Cunningham film ends and Move introduces the final segment, a preview of the then forthcoming film Martha's World, starring himself as Graham. (It was eventually released in 2003 as Ghostlight.)
