Summary
This broadcast takes place 2 weeks prior to the premier of Bernstein's opera 'A quiet place" scheduled to be performed by the Houston Opera on June 17, 1983 (probably between June 2-4). It is a scrutiny of Bernstein as an opera composer of the 1 act work "Trouble in Tahiti" composed in 1952 and a 30-year later 3 act work that incorporates the former. Commentaries cover synopsis of both works as well as the psychology of the characters, the different type of music used by the composer, reasons that turned Bernstein away from writing musicals for Broadway and led him to the creation of the opera, and circumstances that steered him to explore this option. Excerpts of his music intermix with spoken texts.
