In episode no. 4, cellist Douglas Cummings recovers after a stroke. Originally a television series in 1984 for BBC TV, this was re-broadcast in America on A&E (Arts and Entertainment Network) in December 1986. Includes commercials and several movie trailers featured on A&E, plus an extra "Portrait of a conductor" featuring conductor Alain Lombard (5 min., videotaped in unidentified church in Paris, France, rehearsing excerpts from Berlioz's "Damnation of Faust") and the last half of the BBC 1983 television broadcast of N. C. Hunter's play "The waters of the moon", re-broadcast on A&E on "Stages". Some of the video clips of "Life of an orchestra" include two excerpts of the BBC television program "André Previn's music night", originally aired in both 1975 and 1979, featuring the LSO's former conductor, André Previn (1968-1979). One of the episodes was sponsored by Buick Motor Company. Featured music excerpts: [Episode 3]: Webern's op. 6 ; Symphony no. 1 / Mahler ; Rosamunde Entr'actes / Schubert -- [Portrait of a conductor]: Damnation of Faust / Berlioz -- [Stage: Waters of the moon] "The Lucy Escott variations" / Hans Werner Henze -- [Episode 4]: "Ch'io mi scordi di te?" / Mozart ; Die Meistersinger overture / Wagner ; The Firebird suite / Stravinsky ; "Gott in allen Landen" / J. S. Bach ; [Unknown soprano aria from] Macbeth / Verdi -- [Episode 2]: Symphony no. 1 / Mahler ; [End of] Die Meistersinger overture / Wagner -- [Episode 1]: Trumpet concerto in E-flat / Haydn.
