- Summary
- Mikhail Baryshnikov and White Oak Dance Project in a dress rehearsal for Past Forward, a retrospective and celebration of Judson Dance. Live performance alternates with video sequences, created by Charles Atlas and narrated by Baryshnikov. This video details how Judson fit within the cultural landscape of the 1960s. Stills and video interviews bracket the performance of live works, explained in part by its choreographer. Explanatory text precedes some pieces. Public participation is part of the program: local dancers, students, and community members take part in several works. This dress rehearsal includes a Gordon work, "Beethoven", that is not included in the Princeton performances. The recording begins with a brief fragment of the dancers warming up, then commences the rehearsal. There are sections where the Sousa march volume overwhelms the narration and where audio is muddy. Visual quality is poor throughout. "Single Duet" has a more improvisational feel than it does in subsequent performances.
