Summary
Panel discussion 1: Michael Mayer (director) and Christine Jones (set designer) discuss their version of the Metropolitan Opera's Rigoletto, how Mayer picked the setting of Las Vegas in the 1960's, the difference in time for preparing for this production compared to Broadway musicals, the synopsis of the opera, how and why it translates easily to Las Vegas, slides of images they used to inspire the sets, character comparisions to the Rat Pack, slides of sets and costume sketches for this production, translating and modernizing the story to the 1960's. Panel discussion 2: Mayer and Jones talk about their normal collaborative process and how it was different for this opera production, the differences between directing musicals and operas, the experience of working at the Met compared to Broadway, showing a 3 min. video of a rehearsal for this production (begins at approximately 59 min.), working with the three leads, Peter Gelb (General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera) attending rehearsals and collaborating with Mayer and Jones, their biggest worries about the production, a message for the opera purists, Mayer being a fan of opera and the first time he remembers seeing Rigoletto, how Rigoletto is at the top of Mayer's list of operas he wanted to direct, Jones being new to opera, and setting up the final scene.
