- Summary
- Krips, an Austrian conductor, speaks about the diverse repertoire at the stadium concerts; works he conducts during regular seasons in concert halls; the rise of the Buffalo Orchestra under his 8 year leadership; the Viennese School and the influence of its representative Felix Weingartner, a prominent conductor and composer, who taught Krips among other distinguished pupils. Krips recounts conducting at Bayreuth Festival; watching many famous musicians in rehearsals including Toscanini; discusses the complexity of producing Wagner and praises the new modern style of Wagnerian opera initiated by Wagner's grandson, opera director Wieland Wagner. Krips recalls the hard period after WWII when he went back to Vienna, his hometown, in an effort to revive their music culture, and how his work with singers during the war changed his approach to the way instruments should sound.
