Biography
Noted scenic designer, Boris Aronson, was born in Kiev on Oct. 15, ca. 1900. He studied art in Russia, Paris and Berlin, emigrating to New York ca. 1923, where he worked in the Yiddish theater, and then with the Group Theatre under Harold Clurman. His first production on Broadway was the musical revue Walk a little faster in 1932. Aronson went on to design over 100 productions, including ballets and operas, winning 6 Tony awards for his work in the theatre. Among his most notable productions are Awake and sing! by Clifford Odets, 1935, The rose tattoo by Tennessee Williams, 1951; with director Harold Prince: Fiddler on the roof, 1964; Cabaret, 1966; Zorba, 1968; Company, 1970; Follies, 1971; and Pacific overtures, 1976. Aronson also worked as a painter and sculptor. In 1945, Aronson married Lisa Jalowetz, his assistant from 1943, and they had one son. Aronson died in a hospital in Nyack, New York on Nov. 16, 1980.
