- Summary
- Program devoted to English theater history, featuring readings from the correspondence of stage luminaries, playwrights, and directors, culled from the collections of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The program, held in conjunction with a series called UKwithNY, also celebrated the re-opening of the library after a three-year renovation. Selected correspondence includes letters of John Gielgud, Sybil Thorndike, Lillian Gish, John Van Druten, and Margaret Webster. Playwright Peter Shaffer reads from Gielgud's letters, and reminisces about working with him on his first produced play, Five finger exercise. Patricia Elliott reads from Sybil Thorndike's letters, and reminisces about working with her in the 1960s.
