Summary
This panel discussion on The sleeping beauty moves through the ballet sequentially, with the speakers commenting on the music, choreography and mime of various versions of the ballet; and on characters, performances by various dancers, design and costume elements, artistic and historical influences, and plot and thematic elements, as they relate to individual scenes and variations. Alastair Macaulay introduces the discussion and asks each speaker to comment on why he values The sleeping beauty. The speakers discuss whether the ballet remains relevant as a major work of Western art. Greskovic speaks about the importance of the courtly world in which the ballet is set and its manners. Vaughan comments on the importance of Tchaikovsky's music for the ballet. Throughout the conversation, the speakers frequently refer to a film of The sleeping beauty performed by the Sadler's Wells Ballet, featuring Margot Fonteyn, shot by Victor Jessen between 1949 and 1955. (This film, *MGZIA 4-4675, can be viewed at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.) Other major productions frequently discussed are the 1890 original production choreographed by Marius Petipa for the Mariinsky Ballet under director Ivan Vsevolozhsky; productions for the Royal Ballet staged by Nikolai Sergeev, Frederick Ashton, Ninette de Valois, Natalia Makarova, Anthony Dowell, and Kenneth MacMillan; Konstantin Sergeev's production for the Kirov Ballet; several productions by American Ballet Theatre; the New York City Ballet production staged by Peter Martins; and Sergei Vikharev's reconstruction of the original Petipa production, for the Mariinsky Ballet in 1999. The speakers also discuss George Balanchine's opinions of the ballet, though he did not stage a full production, and Lincoln Kirstein's involvement in the New York City Ballet production. Critics and historians referred to throughout the discussion include Arlene Croce, Roland John Wiley, Tim Scholl, Fyodor Lopukhov, and Maria Konstantinova. At times the speakers refer to pictures in books, which they identify. David Vaughan's writings on the ballet for Ballet Review are also discussed. Macaulay quotes the recollections of dancers Julia Farron and Pamela May. The speakers comment throughout the discussion on their preferred stagings, performances, and interpretations.
