- Set design for Herbert Ross's ballet The maids, depicting a sparsely furnished room with a bed at left; a table and oval mirror at center; and a chair before an open french window, the curtains of which float in the breeze, at right. - Herbert Ross.
- Biography (note)
- The maids (choreography, Herbert Ross; music, Darius Milhaud; scenario based on the play by Jean Genet) was first presented by Ballet Theatre Workshop at the Phoenix Theatre, New York, in May 1957 as one of its "previews." It was not taken into the repertory of American Ballet Theatre until 1973. An uncredited photograph depicts a similar but not identical drawing signed by William Pitkin, captioned "'The maids' a ballet by Herb Ross based on the play by J. Genet for Ballet Theatre 1958." Although the date on this design implies that it was made after the fact, Doris Hering's Dance magazine review in July 1957 quotes from the signs on the easels, and a production photograph shows a glimpse of the bed.
- William Pitkin, also known as Bill Pitkin, d. 1990, designed sets and costumes for plays, operas, ballets, and films. In 1978 he won an Emmy award for his costume designs for the San Francisco Ballet's production of Michael Smuin's Romeo and Juliet.
