- Summary
- Introduced to the audience by Elia Kazan, Rondiris, a scholar of law, classics and drama production, a former actor, and one time producer and director of the National Theater of Greece, talks about his 1st visit to America presenting Electra, about the role of the classical theater, the relevance of ancient history to the present times, and the responsibility of the elite to support classical theater. He defines and examines Greek tragedy and its role in the ancient drama, speaks about the origin of tragedy, the reason for the frequent depiction of gods, the eternal truth the leitmotif, the ceremonial character, the freedom of the metric composition of lyrics, and the emphasis on the rhythm. At the end of the lecture, Rondiris recites a few excerpts from Electra to demonstrate the essence of the rhythm and stress.
