- Summary
- The Musicians collection depicts mainly individual African American musicians, composers, and conductors associated with blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, blues, pop and other genres. The collection dates from the 1920s to the 1980s, with the bulk of the images from the 1950s to the 1980s, and consists mostly of studio portraits as well as a few views of the artists in performance or in practice sessions, some probably used for publicity purposes. The collection has limited photos of composers and conductors, musicians based outside the United States and female musicians. A few child prodigies are pictured. Among the musicians depicted are Arthur Blythe, Anthony Braxton, George Duke, Chico Freeman, Albert King, Freddy King, Wynton, Marsalis, David Newman, Noel Pointer, Professor Longhair, Lonnie Liston Smith, Sonny Terry, Bobby Timmons, Chick Webb, Junior Wells, and Tony Williams. Collection includes portraits of composer Luther Henderson and conductor Harlan Leonard.
- Other photograph collections containing images of musicians include Entertainers, Musical Groups, the Portrait Collection, the Helen Armstead-Johnson Photograph Collection, and the Frederick D. Murphy Photograph Collection. Related collections are Musical Groups, Vocalists and Vocal Groups.
