Summary
The Musical Groups collection depicts African American and multiracial musical groups primarily associated with jazz, blues, rock, soul, funk, rhythm and blues, disco, and other genres. The collection dates from the 1920s to the 1980s and consists mostly of studio portraits as well as a few views of the recording artists in performance and candid shots, some probably used for publicity purposes. Among the groups depicted are the Bar-Kays, Flamingos, Four Tops, Kid Ory's Original Creole Jazz Band, Lenny White Group, Ohio Players, Ramsey Lewis Trio and the S.O.S. Band. Orchestras include the Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra, Don Redman and his Orchestra and the Johnny Otis Orchestra. Images from the 1920s to the 1950s are limited, as are musical groups based outside the United States and all-female groups. Other photograph collections containing images of musical groups include Entertainers, the Portrait Collection, the Helen Armstead-Johnson Photograph Collection, and the Frederick D. Murphy Photograph Collection. Related collections includeEntertainers, Musicians, Vocalists, and Vocal Groups.
