Edward Henkel (dancer) discusses his first introduction to Erick Hawkins while he was dancing with Jean Erdman; Erdman giving him permission to study and perform with Hawkins; description of the Hawkins studio; why Hawkins' work resonated with him; wearing full body make-up; going to Santa Fe to rehearse with the company on tour before he was a company member; creating and performing in the first full production of Lords of Persia at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; how Hawkins worked with props and masks; description of the Hawkins movement style and how it looked on dancers; leaving company due to financial reasons and subsequently performing with Eliot Feld and Merce Cunningham; how Hawkins aesthetic has always informed Henkel's choreographic works; the importance of this symposium and Hawkins' legacy; Hawkins as a performer; and other choreographers Henkel studied with including Merce Cunningham, José Limon, and Paul Sansardo.
