Overview of events at the 1983 Spoleto Festival U.S.A. in Charleston, South Carolina, including interviews with the festival's founder, Gian Carlo Menotti; footage of Dance Theatre of Harlem rehearsing George Balanchine's The four temperaments and performing John Taras's Firebird; scenes from Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly (directed by Ken Russell) and Barber's Antony and Cleopatra (directed by Menotti); and a production of Menotti's The unicorn, the gorgon, and the manticore (choreography: Salvatore Aiello); and glimpses of outdoor presentations.
