- The panelists discuss Agnes de Mille; her early dance career in England; creating Rodeo for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo; a quote by De Mille about Frederic Franklin from her book entitled, Dance to the piper; Jerry Mitchell auditioning for and dancing in De Mille's Brigadoon; the need for choreographers to be verbal when comparing to De Mille, Jerome Robbins and Michael Bennett; how Gemze De Lappe began dancing with De Mille; the importance of videotaping as much of the choreographic process as possible; what kinds of dancers are needed to perform various works; Jerry Mitchell talking about the dancers currently being using for his Broadway shows, La cage aux folles, Hairspray, and Dirty rotten scoundrels; what Mitchell learned from De Mille about developing characters and always serving the story; how the AIDS crisis scared choreographers away from physical contact in their work from 1980 to mid 1990's; different kinds of dancers De Mille used for her works and how they trained in various styles of dance including Irish Step dancing and African dance; how dance has changed on Broadway over the years; why De Mille has been out of fashion and the reason directors don't want to use her choreography; how the choreography can't survive on its own and must be presented correctly; the difficulty in passing on the legacy of De Mille because of the lack of available videos; and concludes with a Question and Answer session with questions about Martha Graham's influence on De Mille, the difficulty with choreographers remaking musicals from movies when most of the time the choreography was changed due to film restrictions, De Mille's process when creating new work including how she created Rodeo and Juno, and what is on display of Agnes De Mille in the New York Public Library's America's Irreplaceable Dance Treasures: The First 100 exhibition.
