  • Ernst Oppler, 1867-1929, was a German painter and printmaker. The Ballets Russes became one of his favorite subjects beginning in 1912, and he made numerous drawings and etchings of the performances he attended in Berlin, where he made his home. He portrayed many stars of the Russian ballet, among them Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky, and Tamara Karsavina.

Summary
Action drawing of a female dancer. She wears a simple headband, an eighteenth-century style bodice, and a full knee-length skirt, which she holds out with both hands. Although she wears ribboned ballet shoes and is posed in the ballet position called attitude devant, she is not standing on pointe.
