- Summary
- Live coverage of Duke Ellington's funeral in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Les Davis, announcer, described the process as it unfolded (tracks 1-3) with the organ playing. Right Rev. Harold Louis Wright presided at the service and pronounced the benediction. Reverends George McMurray, Jerry Moore, Norman O'Connor and Father Sanders delivered prayers and led the Apostles Creed. Cathedral choir sang Psalms 46 & 121 (Anglican chant) (Disc 1, track 5) ; Rev. Jerry Moore of Washington reads scripture (track 6) ; Lyle Atkinson, Hank Jones, Jo Jones and Joe Williams performed Ellington's song arr. by Jimmy Jones (Disc 1, track 7) ; Brock Peters recited and sang a poem "They say" with lyrics by Herbert Martin (Disc 1, track 9) ; choir performed "Onward, Christian soldiers" (Disc 1, track 11) ; Stanly Dance, a jazz writer, read a eulogy (Disc 1, track 12) ; Earl "Fatha" Hines performed a medley of Ellington songs that included "Sophisticated lady", "I got it bad " and "Satin Doll" (Disc 1, tracks 13) ; Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Taylor, Lyle Atkinson and Jo Jones (known as Papa Jo Jones) performed "Solitude" and an old New Orleans funeral hymn "Just a closer walk with thee" (Disc 1, tracks 14 & 15) ; Reverend John Genzel delivered a meditation (Disc 1, track 16) ; Carline Ray and Mary Lou Williams performed (Disc 2, track 1) ; McHenry Boatwright, baritone, performed "The last Lord's prayer" (Disc 2, track 3) ; Ray Nance, violinist and Brooks Kerr, pianist, performed (Disc 2, track 5) ; organ music (Disc 2, track 7) ; Norman O'Connor delivered eulogy (Disc 2, track 8) ; choir performed "Kiev Melody" (Give Rest, O Christ or Kontakion of the dead) (Disc 2, track 9). Included is a 25 minute recording from Duke Ellington's Second Sacred Concert (Disc 2, track 13).
