Description
1 sound disc (ca. 59 min.) : digital; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
  • Tracks 1 -6 (ca. 29 min.). Greek dance exercises, no. 1-52 accompanied by piano music composed by Mary Starling, and classical exercises no. 90-115, also with piano accompaniment, led by an unidentified woman. This part of the recording consists of the sounds of the voice stating the number of the exercise and the accompanying piano music. Ends abruptly.
  • Tracks 7- ca. 40 sec. into track 8 (ca. 6 min.). [Begins abruptly.] Antony Tudor is teaching a dance class at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, in Lee, Mass., in the early 1950s. This part of the recording consists of Tudor's instructions and the sounds of the piano accompaniment. Part of the sound quality of this section is very poor.
  • Track 8, from ca. 1:40 min. - track 12 (ca. 23 min.). [Begins abruptly.] La Meri speaks about different kinds of Hindu dance and their origins, including Bharata natyam, Kathakali, Kathak, and Manipuri; Rabindranath Tagore and classical dance in India; the import of Western influences; more on Bharata natyam and muni Bharata [muni or sage Bharata, the author to whom the basic text Nasya Shastra is traditionally attributed] ; hand and feet postures; body movements [ends abruptly]. Substantial parts of this section of the recording are marred by a continuous humming noise. The sound quality of this section of the recording is fair for the most part, but occasionally becomes very poor due to extraneous noises.
