Summary

A documentary program reflecting various events in American history through a large variety of songs. An analysis of the vitality of the American experience and traditions in song, from gospel hymns to mountain ballads, love songs to logging songs, patriotic songs to protest songs. Re-creates the settings for many songs and, in other sequences, original film footage and archive stills were used with authentic versions of the music. Includes excerpts from interviews with various singers.
