Summary
Ballet looks forward, no. 99 (ca. 46 min.). [Music]. Introductory remarks by announcer identified only as Rex Benwehr [spelling uncertain]; Irving Deakin speaks about ballet in general terms and recites verses written by John Masefield; Deakin illustrates the forward path ballet has taken since the time of the late nineteenth century in Russia to the present, by broadcasting excerpts of music from the following ballets, accompanied by his commentary (which sometimes takes the form of reciting poetry): La bella durmiente [The sleeping beauty], Swan lake, and The nutcracker; Coppélia; Michel Fokine's ballets Prince Igor, Les sylphides, Le spectre de la rose, and Scheherazade; Leonide Massine's ballets The good humored ladies, La boutique fantasque, The three-cornered hat, Le beau Danube, and Présages; Nijinska's Bolero; Adolph Bolm's Ballet mécanique; and Massine's Gaîté parisienne.
