Summary
This program focuses on the different aspects of adapting ABT II and ABT productions to various theaters. Raymond Lukens and Franco De Vita discuss how they help adapt dancers to small spaces including a phrase adaptation demonstration by students of the American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School using August Bournonville movements including Flower Festival in Genzano. Wes Chapman, director of ABT II/moderator, discusses how he helps his company to adapt quickly by using colored tape for space markers to help deliniate the performance space and he coaches dancers April Giangeruso and Brian Waldrep on altering the Act II pas de deux from Swan Lake due to lack of space. James Whitehill, head of ABT production dept., discusses the challenges of adapting productions to different spaces ranging from Avery Fischer Hall and Bard College, to the Concert Hall at Kennedy Center. He also discusses the new ABT choreographic work, Sleeping beauty, from its inception to its completion.
