- Summary
- Music critic Tim Page interviews the first female American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Zwilich speaks about her early interest in playing music, and her later decision to become a composer. She discusses the role of women and sexism in music and the difficulties in being a female composer. She notes that music reflects society. If society has certain restrictions and concepts about women, she says, then they create an order that reflects these concepts. However, Zwilich notes that it is more possible today to make a living as a composer than it was 15 years ago. She talks about her Pulitzer Prize winning work and says that there was a large cast involved in bringing all of the elements together. She speaks also about language of music; and about the diversity of modern music and her interest in both: classical music and pop music. During her interview excerpts from the String trio (1982) and Passages for soprano and instrumental ensemble, based on poems by A.R. Ammons, are played.
