- Summary
- Music critic Tim Page interviews an American composer Jacob Druckman. They discuss Druckman's career as the composer in residence at the New York Philharmonic, and his role in contemporary music festivals called The New Horizons; his new opera Lamia. He introduces this opera, and says that it is based on the legend of Medea, the struggle between men and women, and the notion of a shift from matriarchy to patriarchy. He also talks about his work called Aureole, a piece which he describes as complicated melody shooting off sparks and rhythms. The composer speaks about the increased interest in new music and opera. He also talks about his roots as a musician and performer; he reminisces about his time as a jazz trumpeter. At the end of the interviews he gives an advice to young composers to write the music that makes them happy, music that they hear. During his interview excerpts from the opera Lamia and symphony Aureole are played.
