- Summary
- Arts administrator Ruth Mayleas discusses her career at the National Endowment for the Arts and at the Ford Foundation with her onetime NEA colleague, Ana Steele. Mayleas, the first director of the NEA's Theatre Program, describes the organization in its early days and talks about its first chairman, Roger Stevens. Mayleas and Steele examine the NEA's role in the arts during the 1960s and '70s and its reduced role since the "culture war" controversies of 1989-90. Mayleas, who went from the NEA to the Ford Foundation in 1978, compares work in the public field to work in the private sector.
