Summary
In October 1986, three self-proclaimed "political prisoners" were transferred to the Female High Security Unit, an underground isolation cellblock in the Lexington, Kentucky Federal Prison. This film traces the stories of the first three women imprisoned there for almost two years. Susan Rosenberg and Sylvia Baldini, members of the May 19th Group, were jailed for their part in the 1982 Brinks holdup; Alejandrina Torres was sentenced for FALN terrorist activities. The existence of this control unit was fought by a coalition of human rights, religious and legal groups and was brought to the attention of the United Nations in Geneva and 1988 U.S.-U.S.S.R Summit. In this documentary, the three inmates describe the physical and mental cruelties of their incarceration, including sleep and sensory deprivation and relentless video surveillance. Their testimony is underlined by the comments of medical officials, the women's attorneys and family members.
