- Summary
- For many African American teenagers, basketball is seen as a means of escape from the inner city. Morningside High School, located in Inglewood, a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, is an embattled school where academic failures can be attributed, to a great degree, to surrounding social ills. Its championship basketball team, however, provides a measure of pride for the students and faculty. This documentary chronicles one season in the life of the Monarchs, in particular, the team's five key players who are filmed in the classroom, at home and on the hardwood of the basketball court. Recruited by college teams, the young men are seen struggling to meet academic requirements, to win crucial games and avoid the temptations of teenage life.
