Summary
Videomaker and southern ex-patriate Ellen Spiro, accompanied by canine companion Sam, invites the viewer on a year-long whirlwind tour of gay Dixie. Adressing the politics of being openly gay in the South, the impact of AIDS in small towns and the relationships between the gay and civil rights movements, the tape also takes a lighthearted view of quirky roadside attractions and visits with an assortment of offbeat characters. Spiro tapes events like the Texas Gay Rodeo, a gay Mardi Gras ball in New Orleans, a lesbian music festival in Cloudland, Georgia, and the Radical Faerie Gathering in rural Tennessee. Among those she encounters are: North Carolina author Allan Gurganus, Alabama gospel singer James Cox, the Monks, creators of Monk Magazine, John Blansett, a person with AIDS living in Okolona, Mississippi, Chance, a 16-year-old lesbian, Miss Miller, an Arkansas pet cemetery propietor and two lesbian bands from Texas, Two Nice Girls and Girls in the Nose.
