- Summary
- New York artist Emilio Cubiero's provocative and defiant performance piece opens this collagist call to arms by the art community, committed in its fight against AIDS and homophobia. It includes the raging poetic declamations of David Wojnarowicz and Rafael Gamba's vibrant canvases which depict the painter's personal vision of the AIDS crisis. Swiss artist Peter Kunz, dying of AIDS, displays his drawings which he considers spiritual healing tools. AIDS activism is also documented in the unfolding of the AIDS quilt in Philadelphia and in the work of the Grand Fury Collective. Bern Boyle, an HIV positive photographer, creates photo postcards of skeletons in various settings to pique awareness of the syndrome's ubiquity. In Spring 1989, the Love Ball was organized by designers to raise funds for AIDS research. Working on a mural for the Community Health Project, artist Keith Haring discusses the effect of AIDS on sexual practices as does veteran Beat poet Allen Ginsberg.
