- Summary
- Three of Lionni's fables, illustrated with whimsical collages and watercolors, are presented. 1.) Swimmy--A little black fish named Swimmy escapes when the rest of his school is swallowed by a hungry tuna. Alone and sad, Swimmy is comforted by the wonders of marine life. Meeting a school of fish much like his own, Swimmy helps his new friends face the dangers of the sea. 2.) Frederick--Five field mice who live in a stone wall work feverishly to get ready for winter. Frederick's work, which is quiet and cerebral, is misunderstood by the others. On a cold winter day when the food supply is almost gone, Frederick brings forth the artistic and poetic harvest he has gathered. 3.) Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse--Alexander, a real mouse that is chased and feared throughout the household, befriends a wind-up mouse that is a beloved toy. Hoping to be loved as Willy is, Alexander asks a magic lizard to change him into a toy too. At the last minute, however, he realizes the limits of Willy's popularity and withdraws the request.
