- Summary
- Performance of Javanese court dances in the style of Yogyakarta. The dances are introduced in Bahasa Indonesia or Javanese and English. The first piece, Klana alus, portrays a character from the Javanese stories of the hero Panji. Klana, a king from foreign lands, is flawed by his lack of self-control. Here he is danced in the "alus" or refined male style rather than the "gagah" or strong style. In Langen beksa sekar "Bhagavad Gita," the Hindu god Krishna gives advice to the hero Arjuna. Sung as well as danced, it appears to be an example of langendriya or dance-opera. Beksan "Bugis" is a Javanese interpretation of Buginese soldiers from the island of Sulawesi as they practice the martial arts. The final piece, Kelasworo polokromo: fragment of Golek menak, represents wayang wong or dance drama performed in the Golek menak style, in which human performers imitate the movements of golek or wooden rod puppets. It depicts a complicated tale of love and war, based on an Islamic epic.
