- Summary
- This program presents excerpts from and discussion of a new production of Purcell's King Arthur by New York City Opera. Excerpts from the production are interspersed with commentary from the conductor, composer and costume designer. The panel begins with discussion of the origins of the opera and the "semi-opera" form. Morris speaks about his decision to cut all of the non-musical dramatic portions of the text, his ideas for the staging and choreography, his involvement with the realization of the score, the role of dance in opera, the integration of dancers and singers, his interest in baroque music, and his feelings about artists making their creative process open to the public. Glover discusses the score and how the opera depicts England; Mizrahi speaks about the costumes and the relationship between fashion and theatrical design.
