Summary
James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor John Goodman. Goodman speaks of his upbringing in St. Louis, Missouri, and his mother, and father, a postal worker who died when Goodman was two; attending Affton High School, and then Missouri State University where he decided to become an actor; moving to New York City, where he appeared in many television commercials, and went on tour with the musical The robber bridegroom; and his Broadway debut in the 1985 production of the musical Big river. Goodman examines his role in the 1987 motion picture Raising Arizona, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, his character Dan in the popular television situation comedy Roseanne (1988-1997), playing opposite Roseanne Barr; his role as Det. Sherman the 1989 motion picture Sea of love, opposite Al Pacino, as Al Yakesy in the 1989 motion picture Always; his work with Peter O'Toole in the 1991 motion picture King Ralph, his role as Charlie Meadows in the 1991 motion picture Barton Fink, his portrayal of baseball player Babe Ruth in the 1992 film The Babe, becoming Fred Flintstone for the 1994 film The Flintstones, his role as Harold 'Mitch' Mitchell in the 1995 made-for-TV version of A streetcar named Desire, his role as Walter Sobchak in the Coen brothers' film The big Lebowski (1998), his portrayal of Mighty Mack McTeer in Blues Brothers 2000 (1998); his work as the voice of James P. "Sully" Sullivan in the animated feature Monsters, Inc. (2001), his experience hosting the late night television variety program Saturday night live, and his current work on the film Masked and anonymous (2003), written by Bob Dylan and Larry Charles. The discussion is illustrated with excerpts from some of these works. Goodman also discusses balancing humor and darkness in the roles he plays; his size, and how it affects the kinds of roles he's offered; and his experience working on films directed by the Coen brothers. A brief question and answer session with Goodman and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
